Medicare Supplement Plan N is a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan that helps cover the out-of-pocket costs left behind by Original Medicare. This plan is one of the most popular Medicare Supplement plans available to beneficiaries and offers outstanding coverage for policyholders. Additionally, Medicare Supplement Plan N is an ideal plan for those who are looking for great health benefits at a low monthly cost.

What is Medicare Supplement Plan N?

Medicare Supplement Plan N is one of 10 standardized Medicare Supplement plans available to those enrolled in Original Medicare (Medicare Part A and Part B). Medicare Supplement Plan N is widely available nationwide and is considered one of the best Medicare Supplement plans to enroll in. The main purpose of Medigap Plan N is to cover the costs you would otherwise be responsible for after Original Medicare pays their portion of coverage.

Medicare Supplement Plan N is considered one of the top Medicare Supplement plans because of its low monthly premium but high benefit return. When you have Medigap Plan N, you will notice very little out-of-pocket costs because the plan covers most costs left over by Original Medicare.

Several carriers nationwide offer Medigap Plan N. So, when choosing the right carrier, it is important to factor monthly premium costs and the company’s rating and reputation. Since all Medicare Supplement Plan N policies offer the exact same benefits, ensuring you enroll with a top-rated carrier is essential.

Medicare Supplement Plan N Coverage

Medicare Supplement Plan N offers major cost-sharing benefits to policyholders. Many of the costs associated with Medicare Part A and Part B receive coverage with Medigap Plan N.

Medicare Supplement Plan N benefits include:

  • Medicare Part A coinsurance
  • Medicare Part A deductible
  • Medicare Part B 20% coinsurance
  • Foreign travel emergency care

Keep in mind, when you enroll in Medicare Supplement Plan N, there are still some out-of-pocket costs you for which you will be responsible.

Medicare Supplement Plan N does not cover:

  • Medicare Part B deductible
  • Excess charges
  • $20 doctor’s office copay
  • $50 emergency room copay

Medicare Supplement Plan N Costs

An important aspect of Medigap Plan N is to keep costs low. From out-of-pocket costs to premiums, Medicare Supplement Plan N can cut a lot of costs for the right beneficiary. If you are relatively healthy for your age and do not frequent the doctor’s office, Medigap Plan N might be right for you.

The monthly premium from Medigap Plan N varies based on several factors. However, the average premium cost for the plan is around $90 each month. This is a huge decrease in premium cost from Medicare Supplement Plan G or Plan F.

On top of the premium cost, beneficiaries are also responsible for the Medicare Part B premium, $20-$50 copays, and excess charges – if applicable.

Medicare Supplement Plan N Excess Charges and Copays

If you enroll in Medicare Supplement Plan N, you need to understand how copays and excess charges work. Not every plan requires these costs. However, when you have Plan N, you must pay these costs when applicable.

Medicare Supplement Plan N copays are required when visiting a physician or when receiving treatment at an emergency room. After you meet the Medicare Part B deductible, you are responsible for a $20 per doctor visit and $50 per emergency room visit.

To avoid these copays, you can visit an urgent care facility. When visiting urgent care, the copay is waived on Medicare Supplement Plan N. Another way to avoid the copay is by being admitted to the hospital from your emergency room visit. In this case, your $50 copay would also be waived.

How to Enroll in Medicare Supplement Plan N

If you are new to Medicare, you can enroll in Medigap Plan N during your Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment Period. During this time, you have six months following your Medicare Part B effective date to enroll in the Medicare Supplement plan of your choice with no underwriting health questions.

Once your Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment Period is over, you are still eligible to enroll in Medigap Plan N at any time. However, you must be able to pass medical underwriting. You will be given a series of health questions and the insurance provider may deny your application for any reason.

If you experience a life-changing event, you may be eligible for Guaranteed Issue Rights. This allows you admittance to certain Medicare Supplement plans, including Plan N with certain carriers.

No matter when you choose to enroll, be sure to educate yourself on all your options before enrolling in a Medicare Supplement plan. You want to be sure the plan you choose best fits your health care needs and your budget.
